The owner of a Houston home has been arrested on felony theft charges after allegedly selling his neighbor’s car and buying a $1.9 million Cadillac Escalade, The Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday.
The suspect, Michael S. Smith, 37, was arrested on Wednesday after his arrest in November and is being held in the Harris County Jail, The Chronicle reported.
The car theft occurred Nov. 23.
Smith told the Houston Chronicle he sold the Escalades because his son was in the Army and needed to move out of Houston.
He also said he had a friend in Houston who had stolen the car.
He told the newspaper he was going to pay the money to the victim’s family, but instead the money went to a Houston man.
